Been on my mind a lot recently. Is my art sustainable? And the answer is no.
The cost in dollars combined with the lack of sales makes it not really practical or reasonable to continue making what I make.
Buy materials, make it, document it, post it, store it. Repeat. And repeat. And repeat. And repeat. Again and again and again….
I have made some 400+ pieces in the last 10 years. At best I have sold a few dozen or so. My work tends to require various materials that can cost up to $100 per piece. Along with that they are “things” that take up space, meaning storage becomes an issue. Meaning I currently have 400 or so pieces in storage with little if any space for more.
Sales? On occasion.
Shows? On occasion. Have been told that my art is not a good fit for most galleries as it is just too “different.” Would fit better in a museum-like setting, but then my art is not really museum quality. Who am I kidding. So I tend to get passed over in Open Calls. “Nice, but not what we are looking for.” “Not something that fits into the gallery or the theme.”
Comments? People like it, but my art is not an easy sell. While I price my art at something that everyone considers “reasonable,” it is not an easy thing to place in a house. So not an easy sale.
So yeah, not really sustainable.
